چکیده

JNC has proposed an evolutional concept of fast reactor recycle system for minimising high-level waste (HLW) by adopting an unconventional recycling scheme based on the idea of “rough removal of unnecessary elements” instead of a conventional one as “pure recovery of necessary elements”. The concept was named “ORIENT-cycle” (Optimisation by Removing Impedimental Elements). “Unnecessary elements” to be removed were listed up from various aspects such as core design, front end and back end of the fuel cycle. Stable fission products that amount to about 60wt% of all FPs were identified as one category of key “unnecessary elements” from a neutronic aspect and also final disposal aspect because they were major parasitic neutron absorbers if recycled and were not required to be disposed in deep geologic media. Adaptable separation schemes and the neutronic feasibility of the multi-recycling were discussed. The production rate of HLW was reduced by a factor of around 10 compared with a conventional cycle. 1. This paper is co-authored by: K. Wakasugi, M. Takeuchi, Y. Nagaoki, Y. Nakajima, T. The Almr System’s Missions for Transmuting Waste into Energy

The Advanced Liquid Metal Reactor (ALMR) Actinide Recycle System is being developed in the United States for application early in the 21st century. The ALMR is a major part of this system and has missions beginning with near-term (10 years), medium term (15-20 years), and long-term (beyond 20 years) horizons. These missions use the same reactor design with modifications only to the reactor core...

Lwr Recycle: Necessity or Impediment?

The nuclear fuel cycle can be truly closed by supp lementing today’s thermal reactors with fast reactors, which can use as fuel the heavy, fissionable isotopes that accumulate in thermal-reactor fuel. In a fully closed cycle, the waste for disposal consists only of fission products with trace amounts of actinides. Eliminating the transuranics reduces the heat load in the repository, increasing ...

Nuclear Development ACTINIDE AND FISSION PRODUCT PARTITIONING AND TRANSMUTATION

Partitioning and transmutation (P&T) aims at making nuclear energy more sustainable from the viewpoint of the back-end of the fuel cycle by minimising the high-level waste with respect to its mass, radiotoxicity and (possibly) repository risk. P&T mainly deals with the management – i.e. transmutation and/or special conditioning and confinement – of minor actinides and fission products, but invo...

Concept of an Accelerator-Driven Advanced Nuclear Energy System

The utilization of clean energy is a matter of primary importance for sustainable development as well as a vital approach for solving worldwide energy-related issues.
